Lighting upgrades

Lighting is the cheapest change that makes a house feel different. It's also the one most often done badly — the wrong color temperature, dimmers that buzz, four recessed cans dropped in a ceiling with no thought to where anyone actually stands. Ken does lighting as a layout problem first and a wiring problem second.

What's involved

LED retrofits and recessed lighting

Old recessed cans can usually be converted to LED retrofit modules without opening the ceiling, which is fast and dramatic. New recessed work — canless LED downlights — goes in where the light is needed: over counters and the sink, washing the walls where the art is, not in a grid centered on the room. Two details that decide whether it looks professional or not: color temperature kept consistent across the whole house, and beam placement chosen for where you work and sit.

Dimmers that actually dim

The most common complaint after an LED upgrade is buzzing, flicker, or a dimmer with a dead bottom third of its range. That's almost always a dimmer/driver mismatch — an old incandescent dimmer left on the wall driving new LED loads. Matching a modern LED-rated dimmer to the actual fixtures fixes it.

Under-cabinet, garages, and smart switches

Under-cabinet lighting on a proper switched circuit instead of a plug-in strip. Garages and workshops upgraded from one bulb to real LED shop lighting. And smart switches — Ken has wired plenty of homes over to switches that run from a phone or Alexa, which mostly comes down to making sure there's a neutral in the switch box, something older homes here often don't have.

Why a licensed electrician for lighting

Swapping a bulb is a homeowner job. Changing what's in the ceiling and in the switch box is not — especially in older Treasure Coast homes where the box may have no ground and no neutral.

  • Fixture weight and IC ratings against attic insulation handled correctly
  • Switch boxes without a neutral identified before you buy smart switches that need one
  • New circuits added properly when the existing one can't carry more
  • No junction boxes buried in a ceiling where no one can ever get to them
